cozy
i had the chance to visit venice during the 58th. art biennale in 2019. besides the main exhibitions in the giardini and the arsenale there are several pavilions curated by different countries spread all over the city. this year's personal highlight can be found on the giudecca island inside the spazio punch which is housing the icelandic pavilion.
the pavilion is created by shoplifter, an icelander resident in new york. the space is building up several caverns completely made of synthetic hair. you are invited to touch, hair is everywhere. it's coming down from the ceiling, the walls are made of hair and there are different colors. the space is filled with a soothing soundscape from ham resembling volcano sounds. in the beginning the hair is pitch black, it's hard to orient yourself. the music is humming. the cavern gets wieder and higher and there are colorful stalactites inviting you to get further in. the final cavern is very light and bright, the hair is almost white there, you have reached your tranquil goal.
i completely enjoyed getting immersed in this expressive yet cozy environment.
